What are local citations?

This lesson covers

  • What a local citation is
  • Structured vs unstructured citations
  • Why citations still matter
  • Which citations matter most

Short answer

A local citation is any online mention of a business's name, address, and phone number, also called NAP. Structured citations appear in directories and listing sites. Unstructured citations appear in articles, blogs, or social posts. Accurate, consistent citations help customers find you and help Google confirm your business details.

What a citation is

A local citation is any place online that shows your business’s NAP: name, address, and phone number. Many also include hours, website, and categories.

Examples include your Facebook Page, a listing on Yellow Pages PH, a Tripadvisor page, or a mention in a local news article.

Structured vs unstructured

  • Structured citations sit in directories with set fields: name, address, phone, category. Examples: Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yellow Pages PH, Azifind.
  • Unstructured citations appear inside normal text: a blog listing “Top lomi houses in Lipa,” or a news story about your opening.

Both help. Structured citations are easier to control. Unstructured ones often bring more trust and real visitors.

Why citations matter

Citations help in three ways:

  1. Customers find you on the apps and sites they already use.
  2. Google confirms your details when they match across many sources.
  3. Some citations bring links and referral traffic.

Today, citations matter less for rankings than reviews and relevance. But wrong citations still hurt, because they confuse customers and Google.

Which citations matter most

Start with the core platforms: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and Facebook. Then add local and industry directories, which you will find in lessons 6.3 and 6.6.

Sort each citation.

What type of citation is this?
