What is the local search customer journey?
In this lesson
- The stages a local customer goes through
- What customers check before they call or visit
- Where your profile, reviews, and website fit
- How to spot weak points in the journey
Short answer
The local search customer journey is the path from a nearby person's first search to a call, visit, or purchase. It usually goes: search, compare options, check details and reviews, take action, then leave feedback. Your Google Business Profile, reviews, and website each help customers move to the next step.
The five stages
Imagine Ana needs her aircon cleaned in Quezon City. Her journey looks like this:
- Search. She types “aircon cleaning Quezon City.” This is a discovery search because she does not have a business in mind yet.
- Compare. She sees three businesses in the local pack and looks at ratings and photos.
- Check details. She opens one profile. She reads reviews, checks hours, and sees if they serve her area.
- Act. She taps Call to book. This is a conversion action.
- Feedback. After the job, she leaves a review. That review helps the next customer.
What customers check at each step
At each stage, customers look for different things:
- Search: your name, category, and rating.
- Compare: photos, number of reviews, and distance.
- Check details: recent reviews, hours, prices, services, and how you answer reviews.
- Act: a working phone number, a correct map pin, and a clear booking path.
If any of these is missing or wrong, the customer leaves for the next business.
Branded searches come later
Some customers already know you. They type your business name. This is a branded search.
Branded searches often come after a friend recommends you, or after someone sees your shop. They still check your profile, so it must look active and accurate.
Many customers never reach your website
Many people call or get directions straight from your profile. This is a zero-click visit. Your website still matters, but your profile is often the first and only thing customers see.
That is why Module 2 covers Google Business Profile in detail.
Try it
Put each action in the right stage of the journey.
Which stage of the journey is this?
-
Typing 'catering in Albay' into Google
Search. This is the first, discovery step.
-
Looking at ratings of three caterers side by side
Compare. Comparing options happens next.
-
Reading recent reviews and checking the menu
Check details. Customers dig into one business before deciding.
-
Tapping Call to book a date
Act. A call is a conversion action.
Quick quiz
Common mistakes
- Assuming the website is the first touch. For local searches, the profile usually comes first.
- Wrong or missing hours. A customer who arrives at a closed shop may not return, and may leave a bad review.
- Forgetting the last step. Not asking for reviews breaks the loop that brings in new customers.
Your action
Walk through the journey as if you were a customer of your chosen business. Your progress saves on this device.

Questions beginners ask
How fast does a local journey happen?
It can take minutes, like finding a pharmacy, or weeks, like choosing a wedding venue. Urgent needs move fastest.
Do customers always visit the website?
No. Many call or get directions straight from the profile. Your profile must answer key questions on its own.
Where does the journey end?
After the visit. A review from that customer starts the next person's journey.
