How does Google determine local rankings?

What we will go through

  • The three main local ranking factors
  • What you can and cannot control
  • How reviews, links, and profile data affect prominence
  • Which actions improve each factor

Short answer

Google determines local rankings using three main factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well a business matches the search. Distance is how far it is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known and trusted it is, based on reviews, links, mentions, and its overall web presence.

Relevance is how well your business matches what someone typed. Google learns this from your profile and website.

Your primary category matters most here. A business set as “Bakery” is more relevant for “bakery” than one set as “Grocery store.” Services, descriptions, and website content add more clues.

What you can do: choose accurate categories, list your services, and keep website pages clear about what you offer.

Distance: how close are you?

Distance is how far the business is from the searcher, or from the place named in the search. Search “pizza in Iriga” and Google looks at Iriga, even if you are in Naga.

What you can do: very little. You cannot move your shop for every searcher. Make sure your address and map pin are correct, then focus on the other two factors.

Prominence: how well known are you?

Prominence is how well known and trusted a business is. Google looks at signals like:

  • the number of reviews and the overall rating
  • links and mentions from other websites, such as local news or groups
  • listings in directories
  • its general presence across the web

Google says well known offline brands may also rank higher.

What you can do: earn real reviews, get listed in good directories, and build local links. Modules 5, 6, and 7 cover these.

What does not work

Some shortcuts break Google’s rules:

  • Adding keywords to your business name, like “Juan’s Bakery Best Cake Legazpi”
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices to appear in more towns
  • Fake or paid reviews

These can get a profile suspended. Build rankings the slow, real way.

Try it

Match each item to the ranking factor it affects most.

Which ranking factor does this affect?

  • Choosing 'Dental clinic' as your primary category

  • The searcher is 500 meters from your shop

  • A feature in the local newspaper's website

  • Fifty new real customer reviews

  • Listing every service you offer in your profile

Quick quiz

1. What are Google's three main local ranking factors?
2. Which factor can you control the least?
3. Which action breaks Google's guidelines?

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a broad category. Pick the most specific primary category that fits.
  • Chasing distance with fake addresses. It risks suspension and confuses customers.
  • Only working on the profile. Prominence also comes from reviews, links, and mentions beyond Google.

Questions beginners ask

Can I change my distance factor?

Not really. You cannot move closer to every searcher. Focus on relevance and prominence instead.

Do more reviews always mean higher rankings?

Reviews help prominence, but they are one signal among many. Relevance and distance still matter a lot.

Does putting keywords in my business name help?

It may seem to, but adding keywords not in your real name breaks Google's guidelines. Your profile can be suspended.
