Local search for service-area businesses

What we will go through

  • How SAB profiles differ from storefronts
  • How to set realistic service areas
  • How to win searches in nearby towns
  • How to collect reviews after jobs

Short answer

Local search for service-area businesses means getting found where you serve customers, not where your office is. Hide your address, set realistic service areas, choose specific categories, and list every service. Build service pages and useful area pages for key towns, share job photos, and ask for reviews right after each completed job.

How SABs differ

A service-area business goes to the customer. Plumbers, aircon technicians, pest control, movers, home cleaners, and mobile caterers are SABs.

Their profiles hide the address and show service areas instead.

Set realistic service areas

List the cities or towns where most customers are. Google allows up to 20, but more is not better. Keep areas within a reasonable travel distance.

Profile essentials

  • a specific primary category, like “Air conditioning repair service”
  • every service listed with short descriptions
  • clear hours and a working phone
  • job photos: before and after, team at work, vehicles with branding

Win searches in nearby towns

Rankings are strongest near your verified location. To reach other towns:

  • build strong service pages for each main service
  • build area pages for key towns with real proof: jobs done there, local reviews, travel times
  • earn reviews that mention the town naturally
  • get listed in local directories for those areas

Avoid copied area pages. Lesson 4.5 explains why.

Reviews after every job

Send a job completion request right after finishing, while the technician is still there or by text within the hour:

“Thanks for choosing us today, Ma’am! If our team did a good job, a quick Google review would help: [link]”

Respect privacy in photos

Ask permission before posting photos from homes. Hide house numbers, faces, and personal items.

Quick quiz

1. What should a SAB show instead of its address?
2. How can a SAB reach nearby towns?
3. When should a SAB ask for reviews?

Common mistakes

  • Listing far-off service areas. Keep them realistic.
  • Copied town pages. Add real local proof.
  • Posting private details in job photos. Ask permission and blur details.

Questions beginners ask

Why do I rank only near my home?

Google still uses your verified location for distance. Strong pages and reviews help in other areas, but nearby towns usually come first.

Should I list 20 service areas?

Only if you truly serve them. Focus on where most customers are.

Can I use photos from customer homes?

Yes, with permission. Avoid showing house numbers or personal details.
