Conversion funnels and drop-off points

This lesson covers

  • How to build a funnel in GA4
  • How to read step completion and drop-off
  • Common causes of funnel drop-off

Short answer

A conversion funnel is the sequence of steps a user must complete to convert, like product view, add to cart, checkout, payment, and purchase. Funnel analysis shows how many people finish each step. The step that loses the most users is usually your first priority, and heatmaps or surveys explain why they leave.

A typical e-commerce funnel

1. Product page view10,000100%
2. Add to cart1,80018%82%
3. Begin checkout90050%50%
4. Add payment info54060%40%
5. Purchase30056%44%

In GA4, build funnels in Explore > Funnel exploration by setting each step as an event or page. Funnels can be open (users enter at any step) or closed (users must start at step 1).

Finding the biggest leak

Weigh drop-off by the number of users lost. In the example, 8,200 users leave between product page and cart, the largest loss.

Common causes:

  • Unclear pricing or surprise shipping fees.
  • Slow pages or a broken mobile layout.
  • Forced account creation.
  • Too many form fields.
  • Missing trust signals (reviews, secure payment badges, return policy).
  • Limited payment options, such as no GCash, Maya, or cash on delivery.

Combine funnel data with heatmaps, session recordings, and short surveys to understand why.
