Evaluating campaigns and avoiding vanity metrics

Your roadmap for this lesson

  • Four questions for every campaign review
  • Why campaigns are judged by their objective
  • How to spot vanity metrics

Short answer

Review every campaign with four questions: what was the objective, what happened, why it happened, and what to do next. Judge each campaign by the goal it was built for. Watch out for vanity metrics like raw page views or follower counts, which look impressive but do not connect to revenue, leads, or retention.

Four review questions

  1. What was the objective and target?
  2. What actually happened (results vs. target)?
  3. Why did it happen (drivers and segments)?
  4. What should we do next?

Judge campaigns by the objective they were built for. An awareness campaign should not be judged on immediate sales, and a sales campaign should not be judged on likes.

Traffic is not the goal

Vanity metrics look impressive but do not connect to business results: raw page views, follower counts, or impressions alone.

Example: A viral post doubles site traffic, but conversions stay flat and engagement rate drops from 60% to 25%. The traffic was the wrong audience. A smaller campaign that brought 500 visitors and 40 sales delivered more value.

Always ask: did this move revenue, leads, retention, or cost?

Quick quiz

1. Which is usually a vanity metric for a sales goal?
2. Traffic doubled but sales stayed flat. Most likely?
