Reading reports, trends, and anomalies
Inside this lesson
- Dimensions vs. metrics
- A five-step way to read any report
- What to check first when numbers suddenly change
Short answer
Most analytics reports show dimensions, like page or channel, in rows and metrics, like sessions or conversions, in columns. Check the date range, understand each metric, and weigh volume against rate. When numbers suddenly spike or drop, check tracking first, then seasonality, marketing changes, outside events, and site problems.
Read any report in five steps
- Check the date range and comparison period.
- Confirm what each metric means.
- Sort by the metric that matters most.
- Look at both volume and rate (10% conversion on 20 sessions matters less than 3% on 5,000).
- Add a secondary dimension or segment to dig deeper.
When something looks unusual
Check in this order:
- Tracking: was a tag removed or duplicated? Did the site update?
- Seasonality: is this normal for the time of year, holidays, or paydays (15th and 30th)?
- Marketing activity: did a campaign start, stop, or change?
- External factors: search algorithm updates, news, typhoon days, competitor moves.
- Site issues: downtime, broken pages, slow load times.
Always compare against the previous period and the same period last year before drawing conclusions.
