Writing direct answers to specific questions
Your roadmap for this lesson
- The answer-first pattern AI tools quote most easily
- How to turn customer questions into headings
- How to write self-contained answers
Short answer
Write the answer in the first one or two sentences under a heading that matches the question. Keep that answer about 40 to 60 words, use specific numbers and names, and make it understandable without the rest of the page. Then add detail, steps, and exceptions below. AI tools can lift a clear, self-contained answer directly into a summary.
The answer-first pattern
Journalists call it the inverted pyramid: most important information first. For AI search, it looks like this:
- Heading: the question in the customer’s words
- Answer: one or two sentences, about 40 to 60 words, with specifics
- Detail: reasons, steps, exceptions, examples
- Next step: what to do now
Before and after
Before (hard to quote): “When it comes to processing times, many factors come into play, and our team always does its best to serve you as quickly as possible.”
After (easy to quote): ”### How long does a PSA birth certificate delivery take? PSA Serbilis delivers birth certificates in 3 to 4 working days within Metro Manila and 4 to 8 working days in provinces. Payment through GCash or bank transfer starts the processing clock.”
The second version contains a subject, a number, a location condition, and a payment detail. An AI tool can cite it without guessing.
Where to find the questions
Use real customer language. Good sources are Google’s People Also Ask boxes, Search Console queries that start with how, what, or magkano, Messenger and email inquiries, and sales staff notes. Group similar questions so one page answers a cluster, not just one phrase.
Rules for quotable answers
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Name the subject in the answer | Starting with “It” or “This” |
| Give ranges and conditions | “It depends” with no factors |
| Use peso amounts, dates, and units | “Affordable” or “fast” |
| One idea per paragraph | Long mixed paragraphs |
| Update facts when they change | Outdated prices left live |
Quick quiz
Your action
Key terms
- Answer-first writing
- Putting the direct answer before the explanation.
- Question heading
- A heading phrased the way customers ask.
- Self-contained answer
- An answer that makes sense without surrounding text.
- Hedging
- Vague wording like 'it depends' without saying on what.
Questions beginners ask
Should every page be a FAQ?
No. Use question headings where people genuinely ask questions. Product and service pages still need normal structure.
Is short content better for AI?
Not always. The answer should be short, but the page should still cover the follow-up questions.
