Identifying AI search referral traffic
In this lesson
- Which AI platforms show up as referrals
- How to build an AI channel group in GA4
- Why some AI traffic stays hidden
Short answer
Visits from AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, and Claude usually appear in GA4 as referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. Create a custom channel group with a regex rule that matches those sources so AI traffic is reported as its own channel. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Google organic and cannot be separated in GA4.
Where AI traffic shows up
| Platform | Typical source in GA4 |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | chatgpt.com (often with utm_source=chatgpt.com) |
| Perplexity | perplexity.ai |
| Microsoft Copilot | copilot.microsoft.com, bing.com |
| Google Gemini | gemini.google.com |
| Claude | claude.ai |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | google / organic (not separable) |
Quick check: Explore report
In GA4, go to Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Change the dimension to Session source and search for “chatgpt” or “perplexity.” This shows whether AI visits exist before you build anything.
Build an AI channel group
Step 1 of 5
Open channel groups
Go to Admin, Data display, Channel groups, and copy the Default channel group.
Add a new channel
Name it AI Search.
Add the rule
Condition: Session source matches regex. Paste the pattern below.
Move it up
Drag AI Search above Referral so these visits are not counted as normal referrals.
Save and use it
Pick your new channel group in Traffic acquisition reports. It also applies to past data.
Regex to start with (update as new tools appear):
.*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|copilot\.microsoft|gemini\.google|claude\.ai|bard|you\.com|meta\.ai|deepseek|grok).*
What to look at once it is set up
Check sessions, engaged sessions, key events, and revenue for the AI Search channel, then open the Landing page report filtered to that channel. Those landing pages are your most cited pages. AI visitors often arrive with a specific question already answered, so they can convert well. Compare their key event rate to organic search.
Example: A Cebu online furniture store found only 180 AI sessions per month, under 1% of traffic, but a 4.1% conversion rate compared with 1.8% for organic. That justified investing in the pages ChatGPT was citing.
Hidden AI traffic
Some AI visits arrive with no referrer, especially from mobile apps and copied links, and land in Direct. Google AI Overview clicks merge with organic. Your AI channel is therefore a minimum, not the full number.

Questions beginners ask
Why do I see utm_source=chatgpt.com?
ChatGPT adds this tag to many links it shows, which makes its traffic easier to identify.
Can I see AI Overview clicks separately?
Not in GA4 or Search Console today. They are included in Google organic and Web search performance.
