Testing visibility across AI search platforms
This lesson covers
- How to run fair, repeatable AI visibility tests
- How to control for login, memory, and location
- How to compare results across platforms
Short answer
Test AI visibility by running the same prompt set on each platform under controlled conditions: logged out or in a fresh session, memory off, the same location, and repeated runs to account for random variation. Record mentions, citations, and descriptions in one sheet so you can compare platforms side by side and spot where you are strong or missing.
Control the test conditions
AI answers vary by account, memory, location, and chance. If you test from your own logged-in account where you often talk about your business, the AI may mention you more than it would for a stranger.
| Factor | How to control it |
|---|---|
| Account history and memory | Use a clean account or turn memory off, start a new chat |
| Browser history | Use a private window |
| Location | Test from your target market; note the city and country |
| Random variation | Run each prompt 3 times and record the count |
| Mode | Note whether web search was on (ChatGPT) or which mode you used |
| Date | Record the date; answers change as indexes update |
The test routine
Step 1 of 6
Prepare the prompt set
Use the same 20 to 30 prompts from your tracking sheet.
Search in a private window. Note if an AI Overview appears, then check AI Mode for the same prompt.
ChatGPT
Use a fresh chat with search enabled. Record mentions and the Sources panel.
Perplexity
Run the prompt and record the numbered sources.
Copilot and Gemini
Run the same prompt and record citations.
Repeat
Run each prompt 3 times per platform and log how many times you appeared.
Reading the comparison
| Prompt | Google AIO | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Copilot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| best coffee roaster PH | 0/3 | 2/3 mention | 3/3 cited | 0/3 |
| pour-over without scale | cited 3/3 | 1/3 cited | 2/3 cited | 1/3 |
Patterns tell you where to act. Strong in Perplexity but missing in Copilot often points to Bing indexing. Strong in citations but weak in “best” lists suggests you need more third-party reviews and mentions.
Example: A Baguio homestay owner saw her property in every ChatGPT answer from her phone. A clean test showed it in only 1 of 9 runs. Her own chat history had been shaping the results.
Quick quiz
Your action
Key terms
- Personalization
- Answers changed by your history, memory, or account.
- Response variability
- AI answers changing between identical runs.
- Fresh session
- A new chat with no previous context.
- Sampling
- Running a prompt several times to see typical results.
- Location bias
- Answers that change based on your country or city.
Questions beginners ask
Why did I get a different answer five minutes later?
AI answers are generated each time and can vary. Run each prompt 3 times and count how often you appear.
Should I test in incognito?
Yes, or with a clean account. Logged-in history and memory can make you look more visible than you are.
