Finding brand, product, and content gaps

This lesson covers

  • The three types of AI search gaps
  • How to use competitor citations to find gaps
  • How to record gaps for action

Short answer

AI search gaps are reasons your brand is missing or misdescribed in AI answers. Brand gaps are weak or wrong third-party coverage. Product gaps are missing facts like prices, specs, or availability on your pages. Content gaps are customer questions you do not answer but competitors do. Find them by comparing your tracking results with the pages and domains AI tools cite instead of you.

Three kinds of gaps

GapSignal in your trackingExampleTypical fix
BrandCompetitors mentioned in “best” answers, you are notAbsent from “best dermatology clinics in Quezon City”Reviews, directory listings, local media, partner mentions
ProductAI says “pricing not available” or gives wrong specs“Unclear if they deliver to Mindanao”Add facts to product and FAQ pages
ContentCompetitor’s guide cited for a how-to questionCompetitor cited for “how to choose a water filter”Publish a better, evidence-backed answer

Use the citations as a map

From your Module 4 log, list every domain cited for prompts where you were missing. Group them:

  • Competitor sites: study which page and passage was cited. What question did it answer that you did not?
  • Review and list sites: these decide “best” answers. Are you listed? Is your information current?
  • Community sites: Reddit, Facebook groups, forums. What do people say about your category?
  • Media and government: news, PSA, DTI, DOH. Can you contribute data or expert comment?

Check product attribute coverage

AI tools answer with attributes: price, size, location, delivery area, warranty, payment options, opening hours. List the attributes customers ask about for your product type and confirm each one is clearly stated on your pages. Missing attributes are the easiest gaps to close.

Example: A Davao appliance store tracked “aircon with installation Davao price.” Competitors were cited because their pages listed “free installation within Davao City, ₱0 for standard 3 meters of copper tube.” The store offered the same deal but never wrote it down. One added paragraph closed the gap.

Record each gap

For each gap, write the prompt, the gap type, who is cited instead, the missing fact or page, and a proposed fix. You will score these in the next lesson.

Quick quiz

1. AI says 'pricing is not publicly available' for your product. What gap is this?
2. Who usually decides 'best X' answers?

Your action

Key terms

Brand gap
Missing or wrong information about you on other websites.
Product gap
Facts customers ask about that your pages do not state.
Content gap
A question competitors answer and you do not.
Cited domain analysis
Reviewing which sites AI uses as sources.
Third-party coverage
Reviews, lists, and articles about you on other sites.

Questions beginners ask

What if AI cites Reddit or Facebook groups instead of businesses?

That shows people trust community advice for that topic. Encourage genuine reviews and answer questions in public communities honestly, without spam.

Should I copy competitor content?

No. Use it to see what questions matter, then answer them better with your own evidence.
