Structured data and its role in AI search
Inside this lesson
- What structured data is and how JSON-LD works
- Which schema types support AI search basics
- What structured data cannot do
Short answer
Structured data is code, usually JSON-LD, that labels facts on a page so machines read them without guessing, such as your business name, product price, or article author. It helps search engines understand entities and can enable rich results. Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews, so treat structured data as support for clarity, not a citation shortcut. It must match visible page content.
What structured data does
Your page says “₱2,499” somewhere. Is that a price, a discount, or a shipping fee? Structured data removes the guesswork by labeling it: this is the price of this product, in PHP, in stock.

Useful schema types
| Type | Use on | What it clarifies |
|---|---|---|
| Organization or LocalBusiness | Home or About page | Name, logo, address, sameAs profiles |
| Product with Offer | Product pages | Price, currency, availability, reviews |
| Article | Blog posts | Author, publish and update dates |
| Person | Author pages | Name, job, credentials |
| BreadcrumbList | All pages | Site structure |
| FAQPage | Genuine FAQ sections | Question and answer pairs |
Realistic expectations
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond normal Search eligibility, and that no special AI schema is needed. Other AI platforms have not published detailed schema policies. So structured data is a clarity tool. It supports entity recognition and product understanding, and it powers rich results in classic search, but it does not replace clear visible content.
Rules
Mark up only what is visible on the page. Keep prices and availability in sync with the page. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. On WordPress, plugins like Rank Math, Yoast, or WooCommerce add most basic schema automatically, so check before adding duplicates.
Example: An Iloilo bookstore’s product pages had schema prices from a sale that ended months ago. AI shopping answers kept quoting the sale price. Syncing schema with the live price fixed it.

Questions beginners ask
Does FAQ schema still help?
Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative sites. The schema still labels question and answer pairs clearly, but do not expect visual rich results.
Will schema guarantee AI citations?
No. It improves machine understanding. Useful, accessible content still decides citations.
