Tag management and tracking implementation
Inside this lesson
- What a tag management system does
- The three building blocks of GTM
- How to plan tracking for a button click
Short answer
A tag is code that sends data to a platform. Google Tag Manager lets marketers add and manage tags without editing site code each time. It uses three building blocks: tags decide what to send, triggers decide when, and variables supply extra details. The data layer, preview mode, and consent mode complete the setup.
The three building blocks
- Tags: what to send (for example, a GA4 event or a Meta Pixel event).
- Triggers: when to send it (page view, button click, form submit).
- Variables: extra information used by tags and triggers (page URL, click text).
Other concepts
- The data layer passes structured information from the site to GTM.
- Preview mode tests tags before publishing.
- Consent mode adjusts tracking based on user cookie choices.
Try it: plan a button click
Plan how you would track clicks on a “Contact us” button.
