How to track local leads and conversions

In this lesson

  • What counts as a local lead and conversion
  • How to set up key events in GA4
  • How to track offline leads
  • How to estimate lead value

Short answer

To track local leads and conversions, first define what counts, such as calls, form fills, bookings, messages, or store visits. Set up key events in Google Analytics 4 for website actions, and log calls, chats, and walk-ins in a simple lead sheet with their source. Then compare leads with closed sales to estimate value.

Define what counts

A lead is a potential customer reaching out. A conversion is any action you count as success. For a local business, these often include:

  • phone calls from customers
  • contact form submissions
  • online bookings
  • Messenger, Viber, or WhatsApp inquiries
  • walk-ins who mention Google

Write your list down, so everyone counts the same way.

Set up key events in GA4

In Google Analytics 4, important actions are called key events. Common ones:

  • reaching a thank-you page after a form
  • clicking a phone link on mobile
  • clicking a Messenger or booking button

Simple key events can be created from existing events in GA4. Button clicks may need Google Tag Manager.

Track offline leads

Many local leads happen off the website. Use a lead sheet with these columns:

DateNameChannelHow they found usServiceBecame customer?Value

Staff fill it in for every call, chat, and walk-in inquiry. Ask “How did you find us?” every time.

Estimate lead value

After a month or two:

  • Close rate = customers ÷ leads
  • Average sale = total sales ÷ customers
  • Lead value = close rate × average sale

Example: 40 leads, 10 customers, ₱5,000 average sale. Close rate is 25%. Each lead is worth about ₱1,250.

This helps you show the real value of local search work.

Quick quiz

1. What is a key event in GA4?
2. Why ask 'How did you find us?'
3. If 40 leads bring 10 customers, what is the close rate?

Common mistakes

  • Counting every call as a lead. Filter out non-customers.
  • Only tracking website forms. Many leads come by phone and chat.
  • Never calculating value. Without it, results are hard to judge.

Questions beginners ask

Is a call always a lead?

Not always. Some calls are suppliers or wrong numbers. Count only real customer inquiries.

Do I need a developer for GA4 key events?

Simple ones, like a thank-you page visit, can be set up in GA4 without code. Click events may need Google Tag Manager.

What about Messenger and Viber leads?

Log them in your lead sheet with the source the customer mentions.
