How to identify local visibility gaps

This lesson covers

  • What a local visibility gap is
  • The main types of gaps
  • How to find each gap
  • How to prioritize what to fix

Short answer

A local visibility gap is any place where customers search but your business does not appear, or where competitors appear stronger. Check gaps in keywords, service areas, profile completeness, reviews, website pages, citations, and local links. Score each gap by impact and effort, then fix high-impact, low-effort gaps first.

What a gap is

A visibility gap is any spot where customers look and you are missing, or where competitors look stronger.

The main types of gaps

  • Keyword gaps: searches like “aircon repair Cainta” where rivals appear and you do not.
  • Geographic gaps: areas you serve but rank poorly in, often farther from your address.
  • Profile gaps: missing categories, services, photos, or hours.
  • Review gaps: fewer, older, or lower-rated reviews than rivals.
  • Page gaps: no service or location page for a key search.
  • Citation gaps: missing from directories where rivals are listed.
  • Link gaps: rivals have local links from news, schools, or partners.

How to find them

Use what you built in earlier lessons:

  • your keyword map from lesson 3.6
  • your competitor table from lesson 7.1
  • your citation tracker from lesson 6.4
  • rank checks from several locations, covered in lesson 8.1

Write each gap as one clear line: “No page for aircon repair in Marikina, Rival A ranks #1.”

Prioritize by impact and effort

Score each gap from 1 to 3:

  • Impact: how much could this bring in customers?
  • Effort: how hard or costly is the fix?

High impact and low effort come first. You will build a full action plan in Module 10.

Try it

Sort each gap.

What type of gap is this?

  • Rivals rank for 'aircon repair Cainta' and you do not

  • Your profile has no services listed

  • Rival has 200 reviews, you have 15

  • Rivals are linked from the local news site

Quick quiz

2. Which gaps should you fix first?
3. Which tool helps find geographic gaps?

Common mistakes

  • Listing gaps without scoring them. Prioritize by impact and effort.
  • Trying to fix everything at once. Focus beats volume.
  • Ignoring geographic gaps. Your rankings vary across your service area.

What is the most common gap for small businesses?

Missing service pages and too few recent reviews are very common.
