How to avoid duplicate and thin location pages

Covered here

  • What duplicate and thin location pages are
  • Why doorway pages break Google's rules
  • How to check your pages for duplication
  • How to fix or merge weak pages

Short answer

Duplicate and thin location pages are pages that copy the same text with only the city name swapped, or offer little real information. Google treats mass-produced doorway pages as spam. Avoid them by building pages only for real locations, adding unique local details and proof, and merging or removing pages that cannot be made useful.

The problem

Some sites create dozens of pages like “Plumber in Pasig,” “Plumber in Makati,” “Plumber in Taguig.” The text is the same. Only the city name changes.

This creates duplicate content and thin content. Customers learn nothing new on each page.

Doorway pages are spam

Google’s spam policies name doorway pages: pages made just to rank for many places, then push visitors elsewhere. Mass-produced city pages often fit this.

Doorway pages can be demoted or removed from search. They can also drag down trust in the whole site.

How to check your pages

  1. List all your location pages.
  2. Open two at random. Read the first three paragraphs side by side.
  3. If only names change, the pages are duplicates.
  4. Ask: does this page help someone in that exact area?

Free plagiarism or similarity tools can also compare pages.

How to fix weak pages

  • Improve: add local photos, staff, landmarks, travel times, local reviews, and projects.
  • Merge: combine areas into one regional page, then use a 301 redirect from the old URLs.
  • Remove: delete pages for areas you do not really serve, and redirect them.

A small set of strong pages beats a large set of copies.

What makes a page unique

Use details nobody could copy from another page: the branch team, a map of service routes, jobs completed in that barangay, local FAQs, and reviews from that area.

Try it

Sort each piece of content.

Is this unique local detail or copied filler?

  • Photos of jobs done in Kapitolyo, Pasig

  • We are the best plumber in [City]

  • Travel time from our Ortigas hub to Pasig homes

  • Generic company history repeated on every page

Quick quiz

1. What is a doorway page?
2. What is the best fix for a weak page with no real local value?
3. Which makes a page unique?

Common mistakes

  • Building pages for every town. Build only for real service areas.
  • Hiding duplicates with tiny changes. Google sees through this.
  • Deleting pages without redirects. Redirect them to the best related page.

Questions beginners ask

Will Google penalize duplicate location pages?

Mass-produced doorway pages break Google's spam policies. Mildly similar pages usually just perform poorly.

Can I reuse some text across pages?

Small shared parts, like company info, are fine. The main content should be unique.

Should I delete weak pages?

Merge them into a stronger page with a 301 redirect, or improve them with real local content.
