Missing, Duplicate, and Multiple H1 Headings

Covered here

  • What the H1 tells users and search engines
  • How to find missing, duplicate, and multiple H1s
  • Why logos and sliders often create H1 problems
  • Which H1 issues are worth fixing first

Short answer

The H1 is a page's main visible heading and a strong clue to its topic. Audit H1s by filtering your crawl for missing, duplicate, and multiple H1s on indexable pages, and check rendered HTML for H1s created by scripts. Multiple H1s are not an error, but missing or duplicated main headings usually point to template problems.

A Dumaguete dive resort’s theme wrapped the logo in an H1 on every page. The real page headings, like “Apo Island Day Trip,” were styled paragraphs. In the crawl, all 80 pages had the same H1: the logo’s alt text. The pages had no visible topic heading in the HTML at all.

The checks

  1. Missing H1 on indexable pages
  2. Duplicate H1 across pages
  3. Multiple H1s on one page
  4. Empty or image-only H1s
  5. Over-long H1s (often whole paragraphs wrapped in H1)

Use the H1 tab filters. Then open 3 to 5 pages from each group and check the HTML.

Common causes

  • Logo wrapped in <h1> sitewide
  • Slider or banner text set as H1
  • Page builders where editors pick headings by size, not meaning
  • Category and filter pages sharing the parent H1
  • H1 inserted by JavaScript (check rendered HTML, Module 8)

Prioritizing

Missing or duplicate H1s on important indexable pages are worth fixing, especially when the title tag is also weak. Multiple H1s are low priority unless they hide the real topic.

Practice: problem or fine?

Sort each item into the right group.

  • Logo as the only H1 on every page

  • One H1: 'Apo Island Day Trip'

  • No H1, heading styled with a <p> tag

  • Page 2 of a category with H1 'Dive Packages, Page 2'

  • 50 location pages all with H1 'Our Branches'

Common mistakes

  • Reporting multiple H1s as critical.
  • Missing script-generated H1s by checking source only.
  • Fixing H1s in content when the theme is the cause.
1. What is a common cause of sitewide duplicate H1s?
2. Are multiple H1s always an error?
3. Crawler finds no H1 but you see a heading. What should you check?

Your action

Next, you will audit heading hierarchy and HTML structure.

Key terms

H1 heading
The top-level HTML heading, <h1>, normally the visible title of the page content.
Multiple H1s
More than one <h1> on a page, often from logos, sliders, or widgets.
Image H1
An H1 that contains only an image, often a logo, with alt text or nothing as its text.
Title and H1 alignment
The title tag and H1 describing the same topic, which helps Google trust the title.

Questions beginners ask

Is having multiple H1s bad?

Google says it is fine in HTML5. It becomes a problem when the extra H1s are logos or promo text and the real topic heading is not clear.

Should the H1 match the title tag?

They should describe the same topic but do not need identical wording. Very different titles and H1s can lead Google to rewrite titles.

Does the H1 need the keyword?

It should naturally describe the page topic, which usually includes the main term.

My crawler finds no H1 but I can see one. Why?

It may be styled text that is not an H1, or added by JavaScript. Check source and rendered HTML.
