Internal Links and Crawl Depth

In this lesson

  • What crawl depth and click depth mean
  • How internal links pass discovery and importance
  • How to read depth and inlink reports in a crawl
  • Ways to bring important pages closer to the homepage

Short answer

Crawl depth is the number of clicks needed to reach a page from the homepage. Internal links create those paths, so pages with few links or deep positions get crawled less often and seem less important. Most important pages should sit within three clicks of the homepage and receive descriptive internal links.

A Legazpi travel agency’s best-selling Mayon tour sat seven clicks deep: Home, Tours, Albay, Day Trips, Page 3, Adventure, Mayon ATV. It had two internal links. Meanwhile, a 2019 holiday greeting post was linked from every page footer. Google treated the greeting as more important than the tour.

What crawl depth tells you

Your crawler records the depth of each URL: the fewest clicks from the homepage. The homepage is 0, menu pages are usually 1, and so on.

Deep pages share common risks:

  • They are crawled less often, so updates appear in Google slowly.
  • They receive less internal link value.
  • They are more likely to drop from the index if Google sees them as low priority.

Reading the reports

In your crawl, open the depth chart (Site Structure in Screaming Frog). Then sort pages by:

  • Depth: Which important pages sit at 4 or deeper?
  • Unique inlinks: Which important pages receive very few internal links?
  • Clicks from Search Console: Do your top earners have strong linking?

The goal is alignment. Pages that make money or answer key searches should be shallow and well linked.

How to fix deep or weakly linked pages

  1. Link from the menu or homepage for top commercial pages.
  2. Add hub pages, such as “All Albay Tours”, that link to every related page.
  3. Add contextual links in related blog posts with descriptive anchor text.
  4. Improve pagination with more items per page, subcategories, or “related” modules.
  5. Use breadcrumbs so every page links back up its category path.

Practice: priority or fine?

Sort each item into the right group.

  • Top service page at depth 6 with 2 inlinks

  • Privacy policy at depth 1 from the footer

  • Best-selling product on page 18 of its category

  • About page at depth 1 with 300 inlinks

  • New location page linked only from one old blog post

Common mistakes

  • Treating depth as the only signal. A depth-2 page with one inlink can still be weak.
  • Sitewide footer links to unimportant pages. They pull attention from priority pages.
  • Fixing depth with a giant links page. Hubs should be organized and useful to visitors too.
1. What is the crawl depth of the homepage?
2. Why can deep pages underperform?
3. Which fix best helps a deep but important product?

Your action

Next, you will find orphan pages: URLs with no internal links at all.

Key terms

Crawl depth
The shortest number of link clicks from the seed URL to a page. The homepage is depth 0.
Inlinks
The number of internal links pointing to a page from other pages on the same site.
Site architecture
How pages are organized and linked, from homepage to categories to individual pages.
Hub page
A page that links to a group of related pages, such as a category or topic overview.

Questions beginners ask

Is the three-click rule a Google requirement?

No, it is a practical guideline. What matters is that important pages are easy to reach and well linked. Deep pages are not penalized, but they tend to be crawled less often.

Does pagination increase crawl depth?

Yes. A product on page 15 of a category may be 16 clicks deep. Add filters, subcategories, or links from related products to shorten the path.

Are footer links enough?

They help discovery, but contextual links in body content usually carry stronger relevance signals. Use both.

How many inlinks should a page have?

There is no fixed number. Compare pages: if a top service page has 3 inlinks while an old blog post has 200, the linking does not match your priorities.
