Local Pack

Local Pack meaning: The local pack is the map and short list of businesses Google shows near the top of results for searches with local intent.

Search for a nearby business type, and Google often shows a map with a short list under it. That block is the local pack. It sits above most regular results, so it gets many of the clicks for local searches.

Local pack vs Google Maps results vs Local Services Ads

These three look alike but work differently:

  • Local pack: the map and short list inside Google Search. People also call it the map pack or 3-pack, since it usually shows three businesses.
  • Google Maps results: the full list you see inside the Maps app or after tapping “More places.” It can show dozens of businesses.
  • Local Services Ads: paid listings, often with a “Google Guaranteed” or “Google Screened” badge. They appear only in some countries and categories, so check availability first.

The pack and Maps results come from the same Business Profile data. Ads are separate and paid. You cannot buy a better spot in the free local pack.

How Google picks the businesses

Google says local results depend mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
  • Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the place named in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known you are, including reviews, links, articles, and directories.

Proximity explains why the pack changes as you move. Search “near me” in Ortigas, then again in Makati. You will likely see different businesses.

Edge cases beginners notice

The pack does not appear for every search. Searches with clear local intent trigger it most. A search like “how to fix a leaky faucet” usually shows tutorials instead.

Your own rank tracker may show a different position than your phone. That is normal, since the result depends on where the searcher stands. Google Maps ranking works the same way.

Example

A dental clinic in San Juan checks “dentist near me” from its own waiting room and sees itself first. A patient searching from Greenhills sees three other clinics instead. The clinic’s website is fine. Distance is the difference. More reviews and complete services, like “tooth extraction from ₱1,000,” can lift its prominence in nearby areas.

In practice
