Search Intent

Search Intent meaning: Search intent is the goal behind a search query, commonly grouped as informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional.

Two searches can share almost every word and still want different pages. Search intent is what decides which page wins. The fastest way to read intent is to look at what Google already ranks.

Search intent vs keyword topic

The topic is the subject, like laptops or aircon. The intent is the job the searcher wants done. One topic can carry several intents. That is why one page rarely ranks for every version of a topic.

Many beginners map one page per topic. A better habit is one page per intent. A buying guide and a product page can both be about the same laptop, but they serve different moments.

How one modifier shifts intent

Watch how a single word changes the results page:

  • “Laptop for students” is broad. Google may show guides and lists, a sign of commercial investigation.
  • “How to clean laptop keyboard” adds “how to.” Now it is informational, and you see tutorials and videos.
  • “Lazada laptop sale” names a store. It leans transactional, and shopping results appear.
  • “Laptop repair near me” adds a place cue. That is local intent, so a map pack shows up.

These query modifiers are your clues. Words like “best,” “vs,” and “review” signal comparison. Words like “buy,” “price,” and “promo” signal a purchase. A brand name alone often means navigational intent.

Reading the SERP as evidence

SERP analysis means checking the top results before you write. Note the content format that dominates. Is it lists, product pages, videos, or local listings? If nine results are listicles, a single product page will struggle.

Intent also changes over time. During 11.11 sales, “laptop” searches can tilt toward deals. Check again before big updates.

Example

A Makati gadget shop targets “budget laptop.” The top results are all comparison guides under ₱30,000. Its product page does not rank. The shop writes a guide comparing five models, then links each model to its product page. The guide matches the intent, and the product pages catch buyers later.
