Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword Cannibalization meaning: Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on one site target the same query and intent, splitting signals so neither ranks as well as one strong page would.

Cannibalization is one of the most over-diagnosed problems in SEO. Some site owners panic every time two of their URLs appear for one query. Often that is fine. This entry helps you tell real cannibalization from normal overlap, then choose a fix.

Cannibalization vs normal multiple rankings

Two of your pages ranking together can be a win. If your guide sits at position 3 and your product page at position 5, you hold two spots. That is not a problem.

Real cannibalization shows a different pattern. The pages share the same intent, and Google keeps switching between them. Neither one holds a stable position.

Diagnosis signals

Look for these in Search Console’s Performance report. Filter by one query, then open the Pages tab.

  • URL swapping: different pages rank for the query on different days.
  • Ranking fluctuation: the position jumps up and down with no content changes.
  • Split clicks: impressions are spread thin across two or three URLs.
  • Intent overlap: the pages answer the same question for the same reader.

If you see several of these together, you likely have a real case.

The three fixes

Merge. Combine the best parts into one stronger page. This is content consolidation, and it often works best.

Redirect. After merging, send the old URL to the new one with a 301 redirect. Google treats redirects as a strong signal for the preferred URL.

Differentiate. If both pages deserve to exist, give each a distinct intent. Retitle one, rewrite its focus, and update internal links.

A canonical tag can help when near-duplicate pages must stay live. Remember that Google treats it as a strong hint, not a command.

Example

A Laguna resort blog has “Best resorts in Pansol” and “Top Pansol private pools 2026.” Search Console shows the two posts trading places for “pansol resort” every week. Both target families booking a ₱6,000 overnight stay. The owner merges them into one guide and redirects the older post. Within a few weeks, one URL holds the position.
