Google Search Console (GSC)

Google Search Console meaning: Google Search Console is a free Google service that shows how a site performs in Google Search, including the queries it appears for, indexing status, and technical issues.

Search Console has many reports, and beginners often get lost in the menu. The easiest way to learn it is by question. Each report answers one kind of question about your site in Google Search.

Search Console vs Google Analytics 4

Search Console shows what happens before the click. It tells you which searches showed your pages and how often people clicked. GA4 shows what happens after the click. It tracks what visitors did on your site.

So “Which queries bring traffic?” is a Search Console question. “Did those visitors book?” is a GA4 question. The numbers rarely match exactly, and that is normal. They count different things in different ways.

The Performance report shows impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position. Filter by query, page, country, or device. In the Philippines, check the device filter, since mobile searches often dominate.

Things beginners misread

  • Average position is an average across all impressions. A position of 8.4 does not mean you sit at 8 for everyone.
  • Data delay: reports lag by a few days. Do not judge a change made yesterday.
  • Missing queries: Google hides some rare queries to protect privacy. Totals by page can exceed totals by query.
  • Property verification comes first. You only see data for sites you have proven you own.

Google encourages site owners to rely on Search Console because its data comes directly from Google Search. Third-party tools can only estimate.

Example

A Quezon City aircon service sees 1,200 impressions for “aircon cleaning qc” but only 18 clicks. The Performance report shows an average position of 9. The title promises nothing specific. The owner adds “from ₱800, same day” to the title and tracks the CTR change over the next month.
