Local Keywords

Local Keywords meaning: Local keywords are search queries tied to a location, either by naming a place or by implying the searcher wants nearby results.

Local keywords are searches where location matters. Some name the place. Others leave it out, and Google fills in the location for the searcher. Knowing the difference helps you choose what to put on each page.

Explicit local vs implicit local

  • Explicit local: the searcher types a place. Examples are “plumber Pasig” or “lechon Cebu delivery.” The place name is called a geo-modifier.
  • Implicit local: no place is typed, but the need is local. “Plumber” or “pharmacy open now” are good examples. Google assumes you want nearby options.

Both kinds can trigger a local pack. With implicit searches, Google estimates distance from what it knows about the searcher’s location.

Common confusions

“Near me” is not magic. Typing “near me” on your web page does not help. Google reads the searcher’s location, not the phrase on your page.

City plus service works for pages, not for profiles. Use “aircon repair Taguig” on your website’s service page. Do not stuff a city into your Business Profile name. Your profile name should match your real business name.

Barangay names matter in the Philippines. People often search by barangay, mall, or landmark, like “salon near SM Megamall” or “laundry Barangay Kapitolyo.” These long-tail phrases have low volume but clear intent.

How they show up in real tools

Keyword Planner lets you set location targeting to a country, region, or city. The same keyword can show very different numbers for Metro Manila and Davao.

Search Console shows the exact place-based queries that already find your site. Look for barangay and city names you did not plan for. They are free ideas for new pages.

Example

A Pasig laundry shop lists “laundry service” on its homepage. Search Console shows it also gets impressions for “laundry Kapitolyo” and “wash and fold Pasig ₱35 per kilo.” The shop adds a short section naming Kapitolyo and its per-kilo rate. It does not rename its Business Profile. Implicit searches like “laundry” still depend on distance and its profile.
