Meta Description
Meta Description meaning: A meta description is a short summary placed in a page's <meta name="description"> tag, which Google sometimes displays as the text below a result's headline.
Google’s documentation treats the meta description as a source for search snippets, not a ranking factor. Its value is in earning the click. Google also writes its own snippet much of the time. So a good description matters most when Google chooses to show it.
Meta description vs snippet
The meta description is the text you write in your HTML:
<meta name="description" content="Same-day aircon cleaning in QC from ₱800. Book online.">
The snippet is the text Google shows under your result. Google says snippets come mainly from your page content. It uses your meta description only when it describes the page better for that search.
This means one page can show different snippets for different queries. A search for “aircon cleaning price” may pull your price table. A search for “aircon cleaning QC” may show your meta description.
Why Google writes its own snippet
Snippet rewriting is normal, not a penalty. Google often replaces a description that:
- Is a list of keywords instead of a sentence.
- Is the same across many pages.
- Does not match what the searcher asked.
- Is too short to say anything useful.
Google recommends a unique description for each important page. If you cannot write one for every page, start with your homepage and top pages.
Length, CTR, and controls
There is no official character length limit. Google says snippets are cut to fit the device width. Many SEO tools flag descriptions over about 155 to 160 characters. That is a tool habit, not a Google rule.
A strong description can lift CTR, your click-through rate. Measure it in Search Console, not by guessing.
You can also limit snippets. The nosnippet rule hides the snippet entirely. The max-snippet rule caps its length. The data-nosnippet attribute keeps one part of a page out of snippets. Use these rarely, since a missing snippet usually lowers clicks.
Example
A Baguio homestay writes “Cheap rooms Baguio, Baguio hotel, Baguio inn” as its description. Google ignores it and shows a random sentence about parking. The owner rewrites it: “Family rooms near Burnham Park from ₱1,800 a night. Free breakfast.” Google starts showing it for booking searches.
