Title Tag

Title Tag meaning: A title tag is the HTML <title> element that names a page. Search engines often use it as the clickable headline in results.

Your title tag is a suggestion to Google, not a guarantee. Google writes the headline people see, and it often uses your title. Sometimes it picks other text from your page. Knowing why helps you write titles Google keeps.

These three get mixed up constantly:

  • The title tag is the <title> element in your page’s head. Visitors only see it in the browser tab.
  • The H1 is the main heading inside your page content. Visitors see it at the top of the article.
  • The title link is the clickable headline in Google results. Google creates it.

Here is the code:

<head>
  <title>Aircon Cleaning in Quezon City | CoolPro</title>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>Same-Day Aircon Cleaning Across QC</h1>
</body>

The title and H1 can match or differ. What matters is that both clearly describe the same page.

Why Google rewrites titles

Google says it builds title links from many sources. These include the title element, the H1, other headings, og:title, and anchor text from links. It is more likely to swap your title when it spots problems such as:

  • Half-empty titles, like ”| CoolPro” with nothing before it.
  • Outdated dates, like “Promo 2024” on a page now about 2026.
  • Boilerplate repeated on many pages.
  • A title in English on a page written in Filipino.

Google may also drop your brand name if it already shows your site name above the result.

Truncation facts

There is no official character limit. Google says long titles are cut as needed, usually to fit the device width. That is why tools measure pixel width truncation rather than counting characters. Put the most important words first.

Example

A Cebu tour operator uses “Home” as the title on its homepage. Google shows “Island Hopping Tours from ₱1,500 | Cebu Sea Trips” instead, pulled from the H1. The owner rewrites the title to match. Google now has a clear, honest title to use, and click-through rate is easier to track.
