Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization meaning: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can pull it as a direct answer to a question. The term's scope is not standardized.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as a direct answer to a question. Its targets include featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant answers, and the short answers inside AI tools.
The term is not standardized. No search engine defines it, and marketers use it for overlapping things. Some treat it as the older snippet-focused practice; others use it interchangeably with GEO. On this site, AEO means getting your content used as the answer, and GEO means getting your brand mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers.
The core technique is the answer block. Put the question in a heading, then answer it directly in the first sentence below, in roughly 40 to 60 words, before adding detail. That length is a common convention from featured snippet practice, not a Google rule. Lists and tables work for step and comparison questions.
What AEO is not: a separate algorithm or a set of special tags. Google says no extra markup is needed to appear in AI features. The answer still has to come from a page that is crawlable, indexed, and trusted, so AEO sits on top of normal SEO rather than replacing it.
