Google Reviews
Google Reviews meaning: Google reviews are customer ratings and comments posted on a Google Business Profile and shown in Search and Maps.
Reviews shape whether people trust you and whether you show in local results. Google also says review count and score factor into local ranking. That makes reviews tempting to game. Google’s policy draws clear lines on what you can and cannot do.
Review generation vs review gating
Review generation means asking customers to share their honest experience. That is allowed and encouraged.
Review gating means filtering who gets asked. A common version sends happy customers to Google and unhappy ones to a private form. Google’s policy bans selectively soliciting positive reviews. It also bans discouraging negative ones.
The fix is simple. Ask every customer the same way, with the same review link.
What the fake engagement policy bans
Google’s Maps content policy lists these as not allowed:
- Offering incentives for a review, like payment, discounts, or free items.
- Offering incentives to change or remove a negative review.
- Pressuring customers to write a review while they are still at your shop.
- Asking for specific content in the review.
Google tightened this in April 2026. The policy now names two staff practices too. You cannot ask staff to collect a set number of reviews. You also cannot ask staff to get reviews that mention a staff member by name.
Recent changes and edge cases
Many shops in the Philippines offer “free dessert for a 5-star review.” That breaks the policy, even if the reviews are real. Google removes fake engagement, and the shop can lose reviews it worked hard to get.
An owner response is allowed and helpful. Reply calmly to low ratings. Future customers read your replies as closely as the stars. Review recency matters to readers too. A 4.8 star rating from two years ago feels less convincing than steady recent reviews.
Example
A Cebu car wash prints a QR code at the cashier with “Get ₱50 off when you leave a 5-star review.” That is an incentive and a request for a positive rating. The owner removes it. Instead, staff send every customer the same review link by SMS after each wash. No discount, no script, no rating requested.
