Conversion Tracking
Conversion Tracking meaning: Conversion tracking is measuring valuable actions, such as purchases, form submissions, or calls, that happen after someone clicks an ad or visits a site.
Google Ads can count conversions in two ways, and mixing them up is the most common reason the numbers in Ads and GA4 don’t match.
The first is a Google Ads conversion action, measured by the Google tag and counted inside Google Ads. The second is a GA4 key event imported into Google Ads. Both can track the same lead form, but they count differently.
Google Ads conversions only count actions that follow an ad interaction, and they are reported on the date of the ad click. GA4 key events count actions from every channel, including organic, direct, and social, and they are reported on the date the action happened. A lead who clicks an ad on the 30th and submits the form on the 2nd shows up in different months in each tool. Attribution settings and counting rules, such as one conversion per click vs every conversion, also differ.
The practical rule: pick one source as the primary conversion action for bidding, and set the other to secondary so it is reported but not double counted. Enhanced conversions, which send hashed first-party data like email addresses, can improve measurement accuracy whichever source you choose.
