SEO or Google Ads: Which Should Your Business Start With?
If you run a small business, you have probably asked this: should I spend on SEO or on Google Ads? Both can bring customers from Google. They just work in very different ways.
The short answer
Start with Google Ads if you need customers this month and have a budget for clicks. Start with SEO if you can wait three to six months and want traffic that does not cost per click. Most businesses do best with both: ads for quick wins, SEO for long-term growth.
How they are different
Google Ads puts your business in the sponsored results. You pay each time someone clicks your ad, which is why it is called pay per click (PPC). Turn the ads off and the clicks stop.
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your website rank in the free, organic results. You invest time or money in your site, not in each click. Results build slowly, but they keep coming.
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Results in days | Results in months |
| Cost | Pay for every click | No cost per click |
| When you stop | Traffic stops | Traffic usually continues |
| Best for | Quick sales, testing offers | Steady, long-term growth |
A simple example
Imagine a bakery in Legazpi that wants more cake orders for Christmas. It is already November. SEO will not rank in time, so a small Google Ads campaign targeting “custom cake Legazpi” makes sense.
Now imagine the same bakery in February, planning for the whole year. That is the right time to build pages for “birthday cakes Legazpi” and “wedding cakes Albay,” so they rank by the next holiday season without paying per click.
How to decide
Ask yourself two questions:
- How soon do I need customers? Within weeks, start with ads. Within months, start with SEO.
- Can I pay for clicks every month? If not, focus on SEO first and use ads later for promotions.
